Contemporary Bands:
Les Baton Rouge: Portuguese/German band, drawing successfully on new wave and riot grrrl tactics to make really fresh exciting music.
Bitch: punk rock violinst, formerly of Righteous Babe label Bitch&Animal, doing the solo thing. should be exciting.
Beyond Pink: Swedish all-girl crusty punk band with radical queer and feminist politics. First album due out on either agitproprecords or emancypunx soon.
Dominatrix: Brazillian all-girl punk rockers, recently toured with The Haggard, who have really catchy and fun political songs.
Drama Machine: local CT female-fronted hardcore band with intense guitar work and smart lyrics.
Fabulous Disaster: rock like crazy.
Bonfire Madigan: out of the orchestra pit! punk rock cello, lyrics as poetry, political passion.
The Dresden Dolls: Wes alum, brechtian punk cabaret that shows how far a piano and drumset can go.
The Epoxies: new wave punk rock madness from portland that must be seen to believe. you will dance like an idiot have have the most fun ever.
The Organ: all girl darkwavers from canada with there first albumm coming out soon in the US, beautiful soaring vocals with music reminicent of Joy Division in a totally unique way.
The Syndicate: "The Syndicate is a New York City-based band, whose radical politics express themselves through passionate music." They have this arty, riot grrl thing going, with the smartest most beautiful and relevent lyrics.
my favorite: About half the songs of this band are sung by Andrea Vaughn, and they are probably my favorite contemporary band, sometimes surpassing The Smiths in my heart (blasphemy, i know).
The Quails: post-riotgrrrl music for the political and art sets, check out there song "Yr heart is a muscle the size of yer fist (keep loving, keep fighting)."
Tilly and the Wall: have a tap dancing section, enough said.
Tracy and the Plastics: fresh from the Whitney biennial, one woman, art, video, and electronic music- and a hell of a singing voice.
The Gossip: sparse rock and roll fronted by the amazing, stunning, passionate, talented Beth Ditto. Their records are good, and their live shows are not to be missed
Kill Rock Stars: record label home of most of the really important riot grrl releases, post punk rereleases, and is still putting out some amazing records.
